Frequently asked questions
Is this legal in Wisconsin?
Yes. We've done extensive research to ensure we comply with FAA, Wisconsin DNR, and state regulations and we stay up to date as laws change. We won't put you or ourselves in legal trouble.
Is there anything I need to do before calling you?
Not before you call — just call us right away. We'll walk you through what needs to happen before we can fly. The sooner we hear from you, the better.
Do you work at night?
Yes — and night is actually preferred. The sun heats the ground during the day, which can interfere with thermal readings. Cooler nighttime temps give us a cleaner signature.
Does weather affect the search?
Somewhat. Colder temperatures cause a deer's thermal signature to fade faster. Some weather conditions — like low visibility — can make flights illegal under FAA rules. Our drones handle temps as low as -4°F, though cold reduces battery life.
What if leaves are still on the trees?
Leaves significantly hinder thermal vision. Searches work best after the leaves have dropped, which also lines up with peak hunting season in Wisconsin.
How far can you search?
Our drones are technically capable of flying over 8 miles, but FAA regulations require the pilot to maintain visual line of sight at all times. That's the real limiting factor, not the drone itself.
What if the deer isn't found?
We'll verify full coverage using the search map on our controller, which highlights every area we've flown. We'll debrief you on the flight and discuss options, including discounted follow-up searches.
What if the deer is found alive?
By law, we cannot give you the location of a living deer. We'll let you know and direct you to contact your local Wisconsin DNR to find out what your options are.
Is the service safe?
Yes. We follow all FAA rules and regulations on every flight. If conditions make a safe flight impossible, we won't fly, period.
How long do drone flights typically take and are there any time restrictions I should be aware of?
At Bad Axe Drone, the duration of our drone flights generally ranges from 10 to 30 minutes, which is sufficient for most projects. However, some specialized searches or assignments may extend beyond an hour depending on the specific requirements. It is important to note that for safety and regulatory reasons, we enforce a maximum flight time of 2 hours per session. Flights exceeding this 2-hour limit will incur additional charges. This policy ensures we maintain the highest standards of operational safety and quality service for all clients.
